Phisician Assistants work in many areas of medicine. While a large portion of physician assistants work in primary care, many work in other specialties.
Upon completion of a certified PA program, most students become nationally certified by the NCCPA, and then begin working. Through their jobs they learn how to practice in different specialties. Conversely, medical students graduate from medical school and then they begin a residency in the specialty that they would like to practice in.
Residency programs for Physician Assistants exist, however they are not required to practice within that specific specialty, therefore they are not very popular and only a small number of PA school graduates go on to a residency program. PA residencies are usually only a year in length.
Currently there are residency programs in the following specialties:
Cardiothoracic Surgery
Critical Care
Dermatology
Emergency Medicine
Hospitalist
Neonatology
Neurosurgery
Ob-Gyn
Oncology
Orthopedic Surgery
Psychiatry
Rheumatology
Sleep Medicine
Surgery
Trauma/Critical Care
